Best practice guidance for the placement and arrangement of embellishments

Site setout

Park users

  • Locate at beach/watercourse access points with high visibility, off the main path of travel.
  • May be sited for efficiency near public amenities, drinking fountains and other water connected facilities.

Orientation

  • Where possible, locate on the beach side of the dunes, on a cantilevered platform to allow natural drainage onto the sand and to minimise sand build up.
  • If a timber deck is used (however not preferred), position the deck for maximum sun exposure to prevent moisture, slime and mould build up, and to prevent slip hazards.
  • Installation, plumbing and drainage to be designed to prevent slippery or wet areas adjacent to shower.
  • Where it is not possible to discharge waste water back onto the sand dunes, direct the fall of the slab into a silt pit and towards a soakage trench. The sand can then be removed by shovel from the silt pit.
  • If pipes and/or conduit are to be installed near a pathway, the preferred location is under the pathway within 500 mm of the edge, parallel to the pathway edge for maintenance access.
  • Consider manoeuvring distance to adjacent obstacles to enable clearance for surfboards to be washed down.

Safety

Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles apply.

  • Pathway connections should be installed to provide access off the main path of travel.

Soakage trench

  • Generally soakage trenches should not be discharged into garden beds, as the addition of high volumes of salt and sand can change the soil composition and affect plants.
    • However if planting and ph levels are appropriate to species selection, soakage trenches may be positioned within a garden bed.
  • Avoid planting directly over the trench as the root system of plants may encroach upon the trench.
  • Position away from tree roots and underground services.
  • Must be accessible by machine for maintenance.
  • Position away from foot traffic where possible, as it has the potential to compact the area.
  • Position so that the soakage trench collar will not become exposed (a trip hazard) in changing conditions, such as sand level movement.
