Garden edging

Overarching requirements
Embellishments should be designed/selected and installed as follows:
- Fit for purpose, appropriately positioned and accessible.
- Durable, robust and safe (suitable for corrosive environments).
- Vandal resistant with parts that are easily replaceable.
- Easy to maintain (with appropriate warranty and workmanship).
- Comply with relevant standards, legislation, corporate documents and approvals
Positioning
- Select an edging material or technique appropriate for all garden bed borders.
Garden edging requirements
- Edging will assist to contain mulch within the required space and prevent it from spilling into an adjacent area
- Edging prevents turf from encroaching into a garden bed
- Turf to be laid flush with garden edging
- Edging must withstand vehicle loads/mowing machinery (where required)
- (A) Spade cut (not preferred) – ‘v’ shaped swale cut into the edge of garden bed
- (B) Timber edge (not preferred) – treated softwood secured by posts
- (C) Concrete edge (preferred) must be extra strength concrete to withstand vehicle loads. Brass markers must be attached to indicate the location of underground services
- (D) Paver and sandstone edge – specification and detail according to T44 Concrete Masonry Association of Australia
- Recycled plastic (not supported)
Finishes and footings
- Concrete edge – must be slip resistant. May be coloured. Install on a bed of crusher dust
- Paver/Stone edge – must be slip resistant. Colour mortar joints to match. Install on a concrete haunch, laid on a bed of crusher dust
