Bins

Positioning

Best practice guidance for the placement and arrangement of embellishments

Site setout

Waste and recycle bins

  • Bins are to be located near entry to parks, near pedestrian traffic areas and near congregation areas.
  • Match bin slab surface finish with surrounding pavement or adjacent pathway finish where possible.
  • Locate recycle bins farthest from picnic tables, shelters and barbecues to discourage contamination with waste material.
  • Locate recycling and waste bins (wheelie bins and bin enclosures) side by side, not back to back.
    • position waste bin on left, recycle bin on right, exception – waste bin is to be located closest to barbecues/picnic areas, other embellishments (to discourage contamination of recycled material).
  • Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles apply.

See Figure 6: Plan – bin enclosures side by side – 240 litre.

Outdoor ashtrays/dog bag dispensers

  • Attach to the side of wheelie bin enclosures (locate towards the front to enable easy access). This will also help minimise visual clutter.
  • Locate away from the prevailing wind to minimise rain infiltration, where possible.
  • The outdoor ashtray must always be located on the waste bin, to avoid contamination of the recycle bin and to allow for easy emptying.

See Figure 6: Plan – bin enclosures side by side – 240 litre.

Figure 6: Plan – bin enclosures side by side – 240 litre.

Site access for waste contractor

  • Minimise distance for collection
    • waste bins must not be located further than 80 metres from the truck collection point. Ease of service, time spent, truck obstructing traffic, etc.
