Drinking fountains

Positioning

Best practice guidance for the placement and arrangement of embellishments

Site setout

Park users

  • Drinking fountains and bottle filling stations should be positioned near facilities, such as picnic areas, exercise stations, walking and cycling paths, skate parks and play spaces.

Orientation

  • Position drinking fountains away from trees, as tree roots have been known to follow the water discharge and damage the water fountain body and foundations.
    • Installation of the inspection pit will help identify this potential issue before further damage has occurred.
  • Installation, plumbing and drainage to be designed to prevent problems of slippery, wet areas adjacent to drinking fountain.
  • Pathway connections should be considered to provide access off the main path of travel.
  • Comply with Austroads 500 mm min offset from path edge to any obstacle.
  • Direct fall of slab towards garden beds/turf.
  • If pipes and/or conduit are to be installed near a pathway, the preferred location is under the pathway within 500 mm of the edge, parallel to the pathway edge for maintenance access.

Safety and hygiene

  • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles apply.
  • It is recommended that drinking fountains/bottle filling stations are located outside of fenced dog off leash areas to prevent contamination.
  • It is recommended that drinking fountains/bottle filling stations are installed in high CPTED value areas where passive surveillance may discourage unhygienic practices or illegal use of drinking fountains.
  • It is not recommended that a dog drinking bowl be incorporated into the design for drinking fountains due to hygiene concerns and the potential risk to public health from cross contamination. However if they are incorporated, the dog bowl should be positioned at the opposing side to the drinking fountain bowl. It is preferred that dog drinking bowls are mounted on a standalone post with a tap.

See LIM Drinking fountains – Technical drawings details for further guidance for opposing side positioning.

Soakage trench requirements

  • Generally soakage trenches should not be discharged into garden beds if they are located at a beach (high sand environment), as the addition of high volumes of salt and sand can change the soil composition and affect plants.
    • However if planting and pH levels are appropriate to species selection, soakage trenches may be positioned within a garden bed.
  • Avoid planting directly over the trench as the root system of plants may encroach upon the trench.
  • Position away from tree roots and underground services.
  • Must be accessible by machine for maintenance.
  • Position away from foot traffic where possible as it has the potential to compact the area.
  • Position so that the soakage trench collar will not become exposed (a trip hazard) in changing conditions, such as sand level movement.

Setout for accessibility

  • Drinking fountain slab requirements are as follows:
    • Drinking fountains should be accessible from 180 degrees to cater for left and right handed people.
    • If a single drinking fountain is to be installed, it should have right and left wheelchair access.
    • If multiple drinking fountains are to be installed, the slab may be reduced in size. Preference is to provide approaches for both sides (allow 1500 mm x 1500 mm for a 90° turn) for left and right hand wheelchair access.
    • If a drinking fountain/bottle filling station (combined unit) is to be installed, it should have the same requirements as the drinking fountain above, plus access to the bottle filling station (both activation mechanism and bottle refill point).
  • A dog drinking bowl should not be incorporated with a drinking fountain/bottle filling station (combined unit) as the bottle filling station may become difficult to access by a person using a wheelchair.

See the following for further guidance:

  • Table 1: Drinking fountain/bottle filling station requirements
  • Figure 3: Plan – Wheelchair approach options to a drinking fountain/with bottle filling station
