Exercise equipment

Summary
Quick reference guide for key criteria
Exercise equipment

Overarching requirements
Embellishments should be designed/selected and installed as follows:
- Fit for purpose, appropriately positioned and accessible.
- Durable, robust and safe (suitable for corrosive environments).
- Vandal resistant with parts that are easily replaceable.
- Easy to maintain (with appropriate warranty and workmanship).
- Comply with relevant standards, legislation, corporate documents and approvals
Planning, design and positioning
- Exercise equipment is NOT intended for placement in the immediate vicinity of children’s playgrounds. If installed in connection with playground equipment, separate by an appropriate distance, fence or other structural measure
- Locate near facilities such as toilets, drinking fountains and other activity areas
- Install at locations with good opportunity for passive surveillance. Orient exercise equipment towards views
- Equipment layout and footprint design – by a professional exercise equipment designer in conjunction with a qualified fitness professional and in accordance with AS 16630:2021 Permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment - Safety requirements and test methods.
- (A) Plant trees at time of installation. Position north and west of equipment for future shade.
(B) Exercise equipment requirements
- Equipment is for youths and adults or users having an overall height greater than 1400 mm. Provide options for a full body workout and equipment designed for different ages and abilities.
- include equipment which targets cardiovascular and resistance training
- include a combination of both static and kinetic stations
- designed to be ergonomically correct
- Park activity entry sign – mandatory. Locate outside safety zone or in garden beds or at most visible location near exercise area. Ensure sign post(s) do not become collision hazards. See signage section
- Exercise equipment user sign – provided by manufacturer. Must provide clear and accessible instructions for safe use, preferably on equipment in highly visible position
- Marking – provided by manufacturer. Includes compliance plate and basic level mark.
- Equipment materials – 316 stainless steel, aluminium, HDPE/poly panels, timber
- Components are to be easily repairable and/or replaceable.
(C) Ground surface material and fixing method
- Ground surface material – As per AS 16630:2021, where impact dampening ground material is required, it must be installed as per AS 4422 Playground surfacing - Specifications, requirements and test method. Design to prevent pooling of water, runoff must be directed away from equipment, pathways and off safety zone. Edge treatments must be concrete, finished flush with adjoining surfaces. Must be slip resistant and have luminance contrast with the background against which it is viewed. See Table 3 for ground surfacing material options.
- Design surface area to minimise cross contamination of loose-fill ground material by other materials.
- Equipment must be bolt down to finish surface, for ease of replacement. Use anti-vandal ‘armour rings’ or equivalent.
- Concrete footing as per AS 16630:2021 and engineering specification.
