Overarching requirements
Embellishments should be designed/selected and installed as follows:
- Fit for purpose, appropriately positioned and accessible.
- Durable, robust and safe (suitable for corrosive environments).
- Vandal resistant with parts that are easily replaceable.
- Easy to maintain (with appropriate warranty and workmanship).
- Comply with relevant standards, legislation, corporate documents and approvals
Planning, design and positioning
- Locate in parks, away from hazards and within line of sight for supervision
- Design multi-purpose, compatible facilities where possible
- Obtain professional advice for individual sports, e.g. dimensions, clearances, layout and line marking
- The most common playing area orientation is 15° east of north, to minimise the effect of rising/setting sun on players
- Provide player/spectator seating and shade. Provide drinking fountain nearby. Ensure equal access
- Drainage designs must ensure field/hard court/outdoor games, does not create areas of standing water.
Sports and games - field and court requirements
- All concrete slabs to be reinforced and designed by a suitably qualified professional
- Park activity entry signage must be installed to activity areas
- (A) Fields and hard courts (basketball, netball, cricket pitch) –
- basketball, netball and soccer ‘nets’ must NOT be installed
- multi-goal systems and multi-sport courts are preferred
- sports surfaces must be non-slip and preferably without coloured surface application
- asphalt courts are not preferred.
- Outdoor games – rebound wall. Position using CPTED principles
- (B) Outdoor games – table tennis
- tables suitable for outdoor use. ‘Nets’ must NOT be installed - use a vandal resistant panel. As a minimum, provide equal access to one end of table
- (C) Outdoor games – board games (chess, checkers)
- games with large removable parts that require management and storage, must be located near a community facility (e.g. library)
- table with in-built gameboard (chess) – Must be vandal resistant and easy to replace game panel if damaged. Players can bring their own pieces
- (D) Outdoor games – pavement games (hopscotch, handball, etc.)
- non-slip line marking. Provide appropriate clearances around games
- (E) Outdoor games – children’s bicycle education track
- incorporate imagination play elements into child size bike track e.g. petrol pump, shops, roadways, parking, signage, obstacles and line marking.
Finished surface and fixing method
- Artificial turf must not be used. Painted court surfaces are not preferred
- Surfaces and line marking must be non-slip
- Bolt down fittings for ease of replacement.
