Barbecues

Positioning
Best practice guidance for the placement and arrangement of embellishments
Site setout
Orientation
- Position barbecues near picnic tables and benches. Provide circulation space between barbecues, picnic tables and seats, on a hard surface (to reduce wear on grassed areas).
- At coastal sites align barbecue cabinet access door to the west to minimise corrosion from salt spray from the south east.
- Align barbecue site and seating to provide views where possible.
- In high wind locations consider the use of a 3 sided, continuous weld wind shield (100 mm high) around the barbecue cooking area. Note this can impede equal access to the hot plate.
See Figure 2: Typical double equal access barbecue set out.
Figure 2: Typical double equal access barbecue set out

Link area
- Provide a pathway from the carpark to the barbecue and associated seating.
Safety
- Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles apply.
Clearances
Table 1: Positioning guidance offsets
Embellishment | Distance from | Minimum distance | Reason |
Barbecue | Any object | 1.0 m or greater as determined by a risk assessment. | Position clear from any objects which may enable unintended access e.g. a child climbing onto the barbecue. |
Barbecue | Waste bin | 5.0 m | To minimise odour impact on food preparation. For double bin installation, position waste bin closest to eating area and recycle bin furthest away (this layout discourages waste being placed into the recycle bin. |
Barbecue | Recycle bin | 5.0 m | To minimise odour impact on food preparation. For double bin installation, position waste bin closest to eating area and recycle bin furthest away (this layout discourages waste being placed into the recycle bin. |
Barbecue | Outdoor ashtray | 10 m | To minimise tobacco smoke and odour on food preparation. |
Barbecue | Skate park | 10 m | To avoid risk of injury. |
Barbecue | Tap (both public use and maintenance) | 3.0 maximum | For barbecue users to wash utensils and for Council maintenance operations. Angle splash pad back into garden. |
Barbecue | Shelter post | 1.0 m | For manoeuvrability and access to and around barbecue. |
Barbecue | Dog drinking bowl | 5.0 m | Council Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2011 states that all animals are prohibited within 5.0 m of a children’s playground or barbecue facility in a park or reserve. |
Barbecue access door | Any object | 2.0 m | For emptying of heavy waste containers. |
Barbecue concrete slab | Any other object | 2.5 m | For deck mower clearance (where possible). Avoid creating small, difficult to mow areas. |
