Taps

Positioning
Best practice guidance for the placement and arrangement of embellishments
Site setout
Park users
- Taps should be positioned near facilities, such as picnic areas, barbecues, walking and cycling paths, dog exercise areas (DEAs) and play spaces.
Orientation
- Drain overflow water away from pathways to avoid slippery surfaces (particularly near taps where users may wash off grease, such as at barbecues).
- Maintenance taps are to be located out of sight of the public (e.g. at the back of a public use tap post), where possible.
- Drainage grates on pathways are to comply with AS 1428 Set – Design for access and mobility.

- Where possible, locate taps on the edge of a garden bed with access from a pathway.
- Locate on a concrete slab with fall to promote overflow into surrounding gardens.
- In low water use areas, install a concrete splash pad under the tap, angled back towards a garden bed for drainage.
- Taps adjacent to paths should be installed on the lower grade side. It is preferred that waste water falls to a splash pad and discharges to an appropriate garden bed.
- If pipes and/or conduit are to be installed near a pathway, the preferred location is under the pathway within 500 mm of the edge, parallel to the pathway for maintenance access.
Safety
- Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles apply.
Soakage trench requirements
- Generally soakage trenches should not be discharged into garden beds if they are located at a beach (high sand environment), as the addition of high volumes of salt and sand can change the soil composition and affect plants.
- However, if planting and pH levels are appropriate to species selection, soakage trenches may be positioned within a garden bed.
- Avoid planting directly over the trench as the root system of plants may encroach upon the trench.
- Position away from tree roots and underground services.
- Must be accessible by machine for maintenance.
- Position away from foot traffic where possible as it has the potential to compact the area.
- Position so that the soakage trench collar will not become exposed (a trip hazard) in changing conditions, such as sand level movement.
Clearances
Table 1: Positioning guidance offsets
Embellishment | Distance from | Minimum distance | Reason |
Tap | Barbecues, picnic facilities, beach access points | Within 3.0 m | To facilitate wash down |
Skate park | 5.0 m | Safety offset to minimise conflict with other users
Edge of pathway | 500 mm | For pedestrian and cyclist safety, comply with Austroads 500 mm min offset from path edge to any obstacle.
Edge of path/parallel to pathway edge | Within 500 mm | Where pipes and/or conduit are to be installed near a pathway, the preferred location is under the pathway for maintenance access
Concrete slab | Any other items | 2.5 m | For deck mower clearance (where possible), to avoid creating small difficult to mow areas. |
