Summary
Quick reference guide for key criteria
Taps

Overarching requirements
Embellishments should be designed/selected and installed as follows:
- Fit for purpose, appropriately positioned and accessible.
- Durable, robust and safe (suitable for corrosive environments).
- Vandal resistant with parts that are easily replaceable.
- Easy to maintain (with appropriate warranty and workmanship).
- Comply with relevant standards, legislation, corporate documents and approvals
Planning, design and positioning
- A public access tap is required near a barbecue
- Splash pad (preferred) – angled towards post/garden, away from pathways
- Soakage trench – site evaluation/soil test required. Trench located as close as practicable to the tap and away from foot traffic, tree roots and underground services. Must be accessible by machine for maintenance.
Tap requirements
- Must be installed by a plumber licensed to carry out the work
- A plumbing compliance permit is required
- All fittings and pipes must have Watermark approval
- (A) Public access taps – timed flow (316 stainless steel push button) preferred or brass/316 stainless steel turn tap
- (B) Maintenance tap – locate at back of public use tap. Removable handle and provide ‘top assembly vandal proof flat brass’ (do not use spline spindle). Must be installed to prevent unapproved hose connections
- Splash pad – preferred size min 400 mm wide x 550 mm long
- Soakage trench – must contain a drainage grate in splash pad which can easily be maintained. Min 65 mm Ø outlet pipe, with self-cleaning fall to a rubble trench lined with geotextile filter cloth and filled with 20 mm screenings.
Finishes, fixings and connections
- Discharging wastewater into stormwater system is NOT accepted
- Public access taps – 316 stainless steel timed flow (push button) or standard brass (not preferred)
- Maintenance taps – standard brass
- Must connect to mains water supply with an appropriate: dual check valve, isolation valve and pressure limiting valve and downstream of water meter. Installed in an easily accessible location within 1.0m of the tap.
- An isolation valve (for emergency shut off) on the supply line of each embellishment.
