Bollards

Positioning

Best practice guidance for the placement and arrangement of embellishments

Site set-out

Orientation

  • Install the bevelled edge of a bollard to face the road frontage.
  • Streetscape removable bollard collars, fixings and locks should protrude as little as possible (to avoid trip hazards) and should be placed out of the line of pedestrian travel.
  • Trail bollard direction markers (with arrows) are to be positioned at locations where a trail forks or the intended trail direction is not clear.

See the following figures for further guidance:

  • Figure 2: Elevation – trees and boulders used in place of some bollards
  • Figure 3: Elevation – bollards installed in/next to a pathway.

For further guidance for bollards in paths see:

  • Austroads - Guide to Road Design Part 6A: Paths for walking and cycling provides guidance on placement of bollards.

Risk evaluation (for bollards near roads)

  • The risk evaluation process detailed in the Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 6 is the default requirement for use on roads. The Council may however choose to approve the use of an alternate process such as ‘generalised hazard assessment process’ if considered more appropriate in context. The design report should document this decision and the details of the alternate risk assessment evaluation process. Consult RPEQ.
