Bollards

Overarching requirements

Embellishments should be designed/selected and installed as follows:

  1. Fit for purpose, appropriately positioned and accessible.
  2. Durable, robust and safe (suitable for corrosive environments).
  3. Vandal resistant with parts that are easily replaceable.
  4. Easy to maintain (with appropriate warranty and workmanship).
  5. Comply with relevant standards, legislation, corporate documents and approvals

Planning, design and positioning

  • Minimise bollard use where possible, use trees, garden beds, high kerb, etc.
  • Locate bollards at boundaries between parks and parking areas to deter unapproved vehicle entry
  • Removable bollards located in the middle of pathways should only be used where a risk assessment recommends them
  • Comply with Austroads min 500 mm offset from path edge to any obstacle.

Bollard requirements

  • Select a design consistent with other bollards installed in the area
  • Black or brown recycled plastic bollards are preferred
  • Timber bollards are NOT preferred. If selected, timber must be fit for purpose and H4 or H5 hazard classification. Avoid heartwood
  • Install bollard tops and caps to shed/repel water
  • Bollard height – 900 mm (preferred), or alternative 600 mm
  • Spacing – 1.5 m centres to act as a vehicle barrier
  • Removable bollards min 3.6 m clear opening width for maintenance vehicles
  • Where a removable bollard is installed centre of a path or near a path, ensure they are illuminated by a street light at night and consider reflectors
  • In-situ – permanent barrier solution
  • Bolt down – permanent barrier solution. Easy replacement.
  • Removable – for approved vehicle access (hinged gates are preferred over removable bollards)
    Drop down – NOT acceptable.
  • Consider the method of safe operation associated with bollards (i.e. size, weight, material and method of use).

Finishes and footings

  • Select a colour which is visible against the background
  • Timber bollards not preferred – finish with non-polyurethane ultra deck or lanotec (or equivalent)
  • (A) Concrete footings as per engineering specifications.
