Bicycle racks and rails

Positioning

Best practice guidance for the placement and arrangement of embellishments

Site set-out

Orientation

  • Bicycle rails spaced at 1.0 m centres allow a cyclist to place and remove their bicycle from the bike rail.
  • Bicycle rails can be located as a single, multiple, in line or in groups.

See the following figures for further guidance:

  • AS 2890.3:2015 – Parking facilities – Bicycle parking, for typical bicycle parking facilities
  • Figure 3: Plan – bicycle parking facility – adjacent to a car park
  • Figure 4: Plan – bicycle parking facility – away from a road.

Safety

  • Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles apply.

Clearances

See the following for further guidance:

  • Table 1: Positioning guidance offset.
  • Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 6A: Paths for walking and cycling - Design criteria - Clearances.
