Tactiles

Summary
Quick reference guide for key criteria
Tactiles

Overarching requirements
Embellishments should be designed/selected and installed as follows:
- Fit for purpose, appropriately positioned and accessible.
- Durable, robust and safe (suitable for corrosive environments).
- Vandal resistant with parts that are easily replaceable.
- Easy to maintain (with appropriate warranty and workmanship).
- Comply with relevant standards, legislation, corporate documents and approvals
Planning, design and positioning
- Minimise the use of TGSI where possible
- (A) Hazard/warning TGSI – position 300 mm from a potential hazard (such as a road), or at an information point
- Install TGSI 600 mm wide min to prevent people with low vision stepping over them
- (B) Directional TGSI – Only install in the absence of other tactile clues
- Luminance contrast is required between TGSI and the background material against which they are viewed.
Tactile requirements
- Ensure TGSI unit edges and individual discrete buttons do not lift
- Ceramics (porcelain) integrated units set into concrete for high profile pedestrian locations
- High specification pre-cast reinforced concrete units for locations with vehicular or pedestrian contact
- Fibre reinforced polymer cast in place or surface mounted units for high use pedestrian and vehicle contact.
Finished surface and fixing method
- Products may require sealing to prevent efflorescence (colour fade)
- Must comply with slip resistance requirements
- Glued and screwed – may be difficult to replace
