Electrical (including lighting)

Summary
Quick reference guide for key criteria
Electrical

Overarching requirements
Embellishments should be designed/selected and installed as follows:
- Fit for purpose, appropriately positioned and accessible.
- Durable, robust and safe (suitable for corrosive environments).
- Vandal resistant with parts that are easily replaceable.
- Easy to maintain (with appropriate warranty and workmanship).
- Comply with relevant standards, legislation, corporate documents and approvals
Planning, design and positioning
- Locate in parks, landscaped areas, amenity reserves and environmental reserves where connection to electricity is required
- Event spaces may require electrical connections
- Consider renewable energy sources
- Pre-design guidance refer – Electrical audit guide and Electrical design guide
- Always ‘Dial before you dig’
Underground components, footings and connections
- Products designed for electrical connections must be housed in a waterproof enclosure
- Cables and cable pits – cabling works must be performed by, or under the direct supervision of, a registered cabler. XLPE/HDPE or elastomeric cables are encouraged, Minimum cable depths maintained. Cable pits must be lockable and trafficable by pedestrians/vehicles. Polycrete pits are NOT to be used. Dependent on the site, lids must be of composite or concrete type, and suit the intended load rating of the pit system installed. Galvanised steel/metallic lids should not be utilised unless otherwise unavoidable to suit the intended load rating of the pit system. Where the use of metallic lids is required, lids are to be coated in a heat resistant, pedestrian grade anti-slip coating
- Conduits – colour to match adjoining surface. Fixings and brackets SS 316
- Light poles – require communication conduits through footing where specified
Electrical requirements
- Inspections and permits for all works required
- Works must be installed by an electrician licensed to carry out the work
- All lighting design requires sign off by an RPEQ. Category P is applicable
- Prior to install consider quality, output, CPTED, future requirements
- Electrical connections to embellishments must be as per manufacture instructions
- All control circuits and devices to be located in main switch board
- Enhanced electrical wayfinding systems may require connection to mains power
- (A) Lighting - open space and security - One or more of the following: uplights, bollards lights, wall lighting, pathway post lighting, shelter lighting, and illuminated lighting. Install photoelectric (PE) cell or time clock. Anti-vandal guards fitted over lighting where appropriate
- (B) Marine turtle safe lighting (where required) – Darkness is the best lighting management option at turtle nesting beaches. All designs within 100 metres of a nesting beach must follow the four guiding principles to minimise light impacts on turtles - ‘keep it off, keep it shielded, keep it low, keep it long’
- Service site, electricity – Installed to allow connectivity to power
- Switchboard type, meter panels and control gear suitable for site
- Sites that hold events may require 3 phase or single phase, site specific
- Required forms - Design compliance Form 15 and Construction certificate Form 16
