Supply

Water supply options for irrigation systems

The water source is the origin for irrigation systems. Water for irrigation can come from mains supplies, rainwater harvesting or collection and recycling of used water.

The below table shows the water source types:

Table 9: Water source types

Recommended use/application
Key considerations
MAINS WATER SUPPLY

Mains connection pipe

Water supply
Appropriate infrastructure e.g. mains water supply, is required to connect to town water
RAIN WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM

Rain harvesting tanks

  • Used to capture and store rainwater from adjacent buildings
  • Rainwater from tanks can be used as an alternative to mains water for irrigation, toilet flushing, etc.

Appropriate infrastructure to capture and store rainwater from roof area

Warning label - do not drink

  • Label is to be UV resistant
  • Position on pipe where most likely to be seen.
Label informing the public that the site uses rainwater and is not to be drunk, installed clearly on pipes and fittings for public safety.
WATER BORE INFRASTRUCTURE

Bore access tap

Locate where most convenient for use
Taps must have removable handle and be tamper proof.

Bore pump

Housed in a secure location with shelter from weather and tampering.
  • Position must provide clear easy access to pump
  • Ensure pump has access to airflow, install fan for manual cooling where required.

Bore storage tanks

Storage of water harvested from bore.

Bore enclosure

Housing of bore pump
Lockable

Bore power source (polar)

  • Solar power may be needed at sites where mains power is not available.
  • Position on bore enclosure roof (close proximity to motor)
Appropriately secured to roof or other structure.
TREATED EFFLUENT

Treated effluent main line

Treated water distribution pipes are coloured purple to clearly denote effluent water; not to be drunk.

Signage informing the public that the ‘site uses recycled/treated water’, must be installed clearly on site for public safety.

Warning sign - treated effluent do not drink

Position at entrance where possible.
Signage is to be coloured purple to denote treated effluent.
